Grimethorpe: 50 homes evacuated as police find ‘suspicious items’ in nearby property
Dozens of homes have been evacuated in Yorkshire after ‘suspicious items’ were discovered in a property.
The bomb disposal team is at the scene on Coronation Avenue in Grimethorpe, which has seen up to 50 homes evacuated.
South Yorkshire Police have arrested a 40-year-old man in connection with this ongoing incident, as the Army EOD team remain on the scene.
Surrounding roads have been cordoned off, with police and paramedics also in attendance.
Local residents fear they may have to spend the night away from their homes.
An evacuation centre at an undisclosed location has been set up and “social distancing” will be adhered to, the council has said.
A resident of Coronation Avenue said: “I think someone has been making bombs. They have the Army and everything here.
“They moved us out and said it could be hours before we’re allowed back home.”
Another resident said: “Especially for the older people who can’t leave their properties during this time and being made to leave it can be quiet uncomfortable for some folk.”
In a tweet, South Yorkshire Police said: “ROAD CLOSURE #Barnsley
“Officers are currently dealing with an incident on Coronation Avenue in Grimethorpe.
“While emergency services carry out their work Coronation Avenue and Queens Road are both closed.”
Members of the public are being urged to stay away from the scene.
