Olympique Lyonnais defeated VfL Wolfsburg, 3-1, on Sunday to lift the Champions League trophy for the fifth consecutive season. Lyon was able to dictate the tempo of the match from the first whistle as they quickly asserted themselves into their high press and began their offensive attack against Wolfsburg.

The pressure was difficult to sustain, as Lyon earned the opening goal in the 25th minute thanks to the work of Cascarino down the flank, who was able to pick out Eugenie Le Sommer for the lead. Suma Kumagai would add another goal shortly before halftime to give the club a 2-0 lead.

Wolfsburg entered the second half playing with a renewed sense of urgency, and would eventually cut the lead in half with a goal set up by Ewa Pajor for Alexandria Popp to head the ball into net in the 58th minute. The German side would see time on the ball in the final third during the winding minutes, but were unable to find the equalizer. Sara Bjork Gunnarsdottir scored an insurance goal for Lyon shortly before stoppage time to secure the title.

Lyon are now seven-time Champions League winners, the most of any club.
